  1. hello there! what a neat heart of service. i am just wondering though if anyone has thought about how this affects the local economy and how we could better support them by buying whatever possible from local businesses?

i.e. shoes. why not support cobblers or shoe merchants that are struggling to feed their kids in lira rather than flooding their market with all of our Nikes?

this is obviously problematic in that it takes a person on the ground to organize such purchases but nothing that cannot be done in a few weeks with a team of ugandans and americans.

    thoughts!?

  2. Good thoughts. Our goal is to help the local economy. The Childrens Village and the school that was built was done by local workers in Lira. The entire Childrens of the Nations operation is staffed entirely by local people in Lira.
For example we just hired new teachers for the new school. As far was purchasing items locally we have done a great deal of that and will continue to do so. However, if you buy 2 inch thick foam mattresses locally not only are they poor quality, they do not last. The mattresses in this container will last for many years. The generators for example are not made of used parts like they are in Uganda so they will also be long lasting. I hope this helps explain why were doing this. The bottom line is there are thousands of kids in Lira who will be blessed by shoes, medicine, school supplies, and many more things that they will not have access to otherwise.

  3. i like the bottom line :)

thats good to hear that you are also focusing on the local economy as well through staffing and purchasing goods that are worthwhile.

    thanks for the response.
